A bedside wall light can free the nightstand, but it also becomes part of the headboard elevation. Plan the light from the bed, where its source, projection and controls matter more than a perfectly centered wall drawing.

    Short Answer

Choose bedside wall sconces by coordinating the full fixture with the headboard, seated and lying eye positions, and access to independent controls. Decide whether the sconce is mainly decorative, a reading source, or part of a layered arrangement. A glowing stone surface does not establish page illumination, and a wall light is not adjustable unless the selected design documents that movement. Mark the headboard outline, pillows, mattress top, nightstand and wall boxes together. For handed designs, specify the left and right units explicitly. Set mounting positions only after comparing the exact source and body from the bed; one general height rule cannot resolve every headboard and fixture combination.

Draw the bed elevation before locating the lights

Start with the actual headboard width and height. Include upholstered wings, projecting trim and any wall panels behind it. Mark the mattress top and the normal pillow position so the fixture can be compared with the person using it. A sconce centered neatly on a wall panel may sit behind a headboard wing or too far away to light a book.

Record where the light can mount: beside the headboard, above the nightstand or on a designed mounting panel. Those positions expose different parts of the fixture. A broad disc beside the bed has a different outline from a long stone column. Leave the complete body visible and serviceable unless the product drawing specifies another arrangement.

Include future movement of furniture where relevant. If the bed position may change, a fixed hardwired arrangement deserves careful planning. A plug-in or portable alternative can answer that need only when the exact selected product supports it; do not convert a hardwired wall fitting without an approved method.

Compare the source while seated and while lying down

Sit against the pillows with a book, then lie in the position you use before sleep. Check the visible source at both positions. A fixture that is comfortable when seated may reveal an opening once your eyes are lower. A diffusing stone surface can also remain visually bright at close range, so compare the intended setting as well as the shape.

Bedside need Design question What to confirm
Decorative evening light Does the luminous surface suit the pillow view? Lowest usable setting and control access
Paper reading Does the source reach the page? Output, direction and actual reading position
Different partner schedules Can each side operate independently? Control grouping and individual switching
Headboard wings or wall panels Does the body clear the full projection? Complete depth and mounting-point location

If the decorative light cannot perform the reading role, keep it as an accent and specify a separate task source. Increasing its brightness may make the visible surface more intrusive without improving the light on the page.

    Six Fixture Comparisons

    Toogle: a compact stone-and-metal composition

Large 'Toogle' Sconce With Alabaster. Large Toogle Sconce With Alabaster is listed at 18 cm high × 12 cm wide × 6 cm deep, with Brass, Bronze and Nickel options. Compare the compact body with the headboard edge and the luminous surface from the pillow. Obtain the mounting drawing before aligning its offset visual form with a wall panel.

Bin: a slender vertical stone body

Bin Alabaster Sconce. Bin is listed at 4.25 inches wide × 4.25 inches deep × 18 inches high. Brass, Bronze and Polished Nickel are selectable finishes. Its narrow front provides a vertical comparison beside the headboard; check the source view and full height rather than assuming the long stone body is a dedicated reading light.

    Fly: specify the handed option

Fly Alabaster Sconce. Fly offers Left, Right and Set Of 2 selections, with a listed 26 cm × 21 cm overall size and Warm Light or Cool Light choices. Its angled stone elements make handed ordering important. Confirm the exact pair and complete projection before coordinating the two sides of the bed.

    Lyla: a rounded glass-source alternative

Lyla Sconce. Lyla Sconce is listed at 9 inches wide × 5 inches deep × 13.25 inches high. The rounded glass form offers a different source view from flat or elongated stone. Compare it from seated and lying positions, and confirm the bulb configuration before choosing the bedside control arrangement.

Art Deco Scallop: a colored glass comparison

Art Deco Scallop Wall Light. Art Deco Scallop Wall Light is listed at 9.8 inches diameter × 8.3 inches high, with glass color choices including Frosted White, Green, Pink and Clear combinations. The broad scalloped outline creates a shorter composition beside the headboard. Request the projection and compare the selected glass from the pillow view.

    Tallis: a longer headboard-side statement

Tallis alabaster wall sconce. Tallis offers 62 cm and 112 cm height options. The documented 62 cm version is 18.5 cm wide × 8 cm deep. A long vertical body changes the entire headboard elevation. Confirm full dimensions for the 112 cm version rather than transferring the smaller option’s width and depth automatically.

Handed shapes, pairs, and electrical controls

Some asymmetrical designs have specific left and right options. Write which unit belongs on each side of the bed, viewed from a clearly stated direction, and request an elevation to confirm it. A set-of-two option should not be assumed to contain your intended handed combination without checking.

Decide how each user will switch and dim the light. A dimmable hardwired sconce may require a separate wall control; it does not imply an integrated switch at the fixture. Place the controls within practical reach and specify the supported bulb or driver with the dimmer.

Ask for the backplate and mounting drawing before locating the boxes. For an offset body, the visible center and electrical-box center can differ. This becomes especially important when the headboard, wall panels and lights are fabricated or installed by different teams.

A headboard-bay example with two different bodies

Imagine a hypothetical bed wall with an 18-inch-wide clear bay beside each headboard edge. A Bin sconce listed at 4.25 inches wide leaves (18 − 4.25) ÷ 2 = 6.875 inches per side if its body is centered in that bay. A Lyla body listed at 9 inches wide leaves 4.5 inches per side.

Those numbers describe the front elevation only. Bin’s listed depth is 4.25 inches and Lyla’s is 5 inches, so both still need comparing with headboard projection and your shoulder position. The mounting drawing must locate each visible body relative to the electrical box.

Make a paper outline of the selected height and width, position it on the wall, and inspect it from the bed and doorway. Use that outline to assess the composition; a temporary light can help explore source placement, but cannot certify the performance of the chosen sconce.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How high should a bedside sconce be mounted?

Choose the position using the exact fixture, mattress and eye positions, then follow its mounting requirements. Our related height guide covers general starting points; headboard geometry still needs checking.

Can alabaster sconces replace reading lights?

Only if the source and placement provide the required page illumination. A glowing stone body may serve as the decorative layer alongside a separate reading source.

Does dimmable mean there is a switch on the sconce?

No. It may need a separate compatible wall control. Confirm where switching and dimming occur for the selected model.

How do I order left and right sconces?

Specify the exact options and show their positions on a bed elevation with a stated viewing direction. Confirm what any pair selection includes.

Can I put a large sconce partly behind the headboard?

Check the mounting and service requirements before doing so. Avoid hiding a source, attachment or access area that the product needs clear.
