How to Measure a Stairwell for a Chandelier

Measurements to Record Before Choosing a Fixture

Start with finished floor-to-ceiling height at the canopy point. Then record the height of the upper landing, railing, and any tread or landing below the proposed fixture. These numbers define the safe hanging envelope. A total drop that clears the lower floor may still feel too low beside an upper landing.

Measure the clear length and width of the stair opening. Do not use the full foyer dimensions if walls, beams, railings, or the stair turn reduce the space available to the chandelier. Mark the center of the proposed ceiling connection and measure from that point to each edge of the usable opening.

Create a Simple Stairwell Measurement Drawing

A useful drawing can be a dimensioned sketch. Draw a plan view of the stair opening and a side elevation through the proposed fixture. Label the canopy center, opening edges, landings, railing, ceiling, and target lowest point. Note whether the ceiling is flat, sloped, vaulted, or interrupted by a beam.

Add the direction of travel on the stairs and identify where a ladder, scaffold, or lift could stand on a stable surface. The drawing is not a structural or electrical plan, but it helps the fixture supplier and installer discuss proportion, suspension, and access using the same reference.

Check the View From Both Floors

Stand at the main entry, bottom landing, upper railing, and any doorway that looks into the stairwell. A vertical chandelier should occupy the opening without blocking the primary view across the railing. The fixture body, not only the canopy, needs to sit in a visually balanced part of the void.

Photographs are especially useful for curved and U-shaped stairs because one measurement does not show how the opening changes. Keep the camera level and include a known architectural edge in each frame. Do not estimate ceiling height from a wide-angle phone image.

Measure for the Canopy and Suspension Layout

Record whether the fixture will use one canopy, an elongated plate, an organic custom plate, or several separate canopies. For multi-light arrangements, mark every suspension point rather than supplying only the overall spread. Check that the canopy footprint clears beams, trim, sprinklers, detectors, and access panels.

The junction box location may not be the visual center of the opening. Do not move wiring or structure based only on a chandelier rendering. Ask the electrician and, when required, a structural professional to review support, feed location, and the final approved canopy drawing.

What to Send for a Preliminary Size Review

Send the plan sketch, side elevation, ceiling height, stair-opening dimensions, landing and railing heights, target canopy location, and photographs from both floors. Include the product link or preferred chandelier form and identify any required finish or glass direction.

Also state whether the space is complete or under construction. If ceiling framing, junction-box location, or access equipment is still being planned, those decisions should be coordinated before the fixture size and drop are approved.
