Short Answer
Choose a fabric-shade chandelier by the complete frame width, shade arrangement, installed drop, and lamp requirements. A round chandelier can use several small shades; “round” does not necessarily mean one large drum shade. A linear frame distributes those shades along an axis, while a tiered or decorative frame adds a different vertical outline. Compare the six designs below using whole-fixture dimensions and individual shade measurements separately. Then review open shade views, source brightness, permitted lamps, finish, controls, and care. Fabric appearance alone does not establish glare comfort, task lighting, or a safe lamp clearance.
Measure the Frame and Shades Separately
The chandelier’s width includes the complete arrangement, not just one shade. Individual shade measurements matter for visual scale, lamp fit, and replacement identification. Fixture height and complete installed drop are also separate unless the assembly information explicitly defines one as the other.
Sketch the shade outlines as well as the arms. An open metal frame can look visually light from the side while its shades still occupy a broad circle over the furniture. Review the underside from seated positions and the upper openings from any stair or balcony view.

Six Fabric-Shade Chandeliers to Compare
| Design | Dimensions or layout | Selection check |
|---|---|---|
| Rhodes Round Chandelier | 4-light: 28-inch diameter × 17.32-inch height. 6-light: 42-inch diameter × 17.25-inch height. | Choose the complete round outline, not only the shade or light count |
| Rhodes Linear Chandelier | Two listed frame widths: 50.5 or 61.5 inches; 5.5-inch depth × 17.32-inch height | Align the long axis and confirm the exact selected assembly |
| Rhodes 2-Tier Round Chandelier | 48-inch diameter × 25.25-inch fixture height | Compare the taller shade-and-frame outline with the single-tier versions |
| Adria Round Chandelier | 36-inch overall width and depth; Pleated White or Flax shade selections | Review the round shade array and obtain its complete hanging arrangement |
| Adria 2-Light Chandelier | 42-inch overall width × 6-inch depth; two shaded light positions | A narrow two-light arrangement with a different rhythm from a multi-shade linear frame |
| Bakala Adrianna Large Chandelier | 44-inch width × 54-inch listed height; shade selection specified at 3 × 5 × 4 inches | Separate the decorative frame’s full scale from its small individual shades |
A Round Array: Rhodes
Rhodes Round offers 4- and 6-light versions. Increasing from the 28-inch to the 42-inch circle changes the width substantially while the listed heights remain close. Compare the complete arrangement over the intended furniture zone and select Brass or Bronze from the offered finish choices. Its extension rods are separate components; establish the actual assembled drop rather than adding every supplied rod.
A Long Narrow Array: Rhodes Linear
Rhodes Linear provides 50.5- and 61.5-inch frame widths with a 5.5-inch depth. Compare those complete dimensions with the table or island axis. The product provides a stated adjustable drop range, but the exact rod combination and completed lowest point still need to match the order drawing. A narrow frame can leave more space beside it without automatically lighting the full countertop or table.
Two Levels of Shades: Rhodes 2-Tier
The 2-Tier Rhodes is 48 inches in diameter with a 25.25-inch fixture height. Its shade positions occupy a fuller elevation than the single-tier round versions. Review both levels from the main seats and include the complete suspension in the room drawing. More levels do not establish that the lower or upper shade openings will be hidden from every view.
A 36-Inch Shade Array: Adria Round
Adria Round gives a 36-inch width and depth with Pleated White or Flax selections. These are shade directions within a multi-shade arrangement, rather than a 36-inch fabric drum. Compare the fabric surface, pleating, arms, and openings from the intended positions. Obtain the complete assembled hanging dimensions when checking a ceiling; the fixture width does not supply its minimum drop.
Two Shaded Positions: Adria 2-Light
Adria 2-Light uses a 42-inch width and 6-inch depth, with Pleated White or Flax shade selections. Its two-light rhythm differs from the repeated shades of Rhodes Linear. Review the actual source positions relative to furniture and any task needs. The design specifies E12 bulbs, supplied separately; compatible lamp size, permitted electrical requirements, and controls should be agreed for the order.
A Decorative Frame With Small Shades: Bakala Adrianna
Bakala Adrianna combines a 44-inch-wide decorative composition with a 54-inch listed height. Its 3-by-5-by-4-inch shade selection is a component reference, not the scale of the whole chandelier. This is a substantially taller comparison than the open Rhodes frames. Review the full frame, hanging arrangement, source positions, and access to the decorative details before selecting it for a room.
Round, Linear, or Tiered?
| Furniture or room condition | First comparison | What to draw |
|---|---|---|
| A central round or compact seating zone | Rhodes Round or Adria Round | The complete circle, including shade edges |
| A long table or island | Rhodes Linear or Adria 2-Light | Frame length, depth, source positions, and ceiling-box alignment |
| A larger circular outline with more vertical presence | Rhodes 2-Tier | Both shade levels and complete installed drop |
| A taller decorative feature | Bakala Adrianna | Full frame rather than individual shade dimensions |
The dining room chandelier guide covers the broader table-fit checks. For an island, use the island layout guide to review actual source positions and lighting needs; a long chandelier is not simply several pendants joined together.
A Worked Linear-Layout Comparison
Consider a hypothetical table 96 inches long and 40 inches wide. If a Rhodes Linear frame is centered along it, the 50.5-inch version leaves a projected length difference of 22.75 inches at each end, while the 61.5-inch version leaves 17.25 inches:
End difference = (table length − complete fixture length) ÷ 2.
Both listed versions are 5.5 inches deep, so their centered width difference to each table side is 17.25 inches: (40 minus 5.5) divided by two. Increasing length changes the longitudinal relationship without changing that depth reference.
These are hypothetical plan measurements, not recommended proportions or required clearances. They do not calculate illumination or prove that the shades avoid every seated sightline. Add the mounting height, shade openings, source layout, and room views before deciding which version belongs there.
Fabric, Openings, and Source Visibility
Fabric can soften the appearance of a shade while its upper and lower openings still expose the source from some positions. Review the fixture from seated eye level, the doorway, and any upper landing. A pale or pleated shade does not guarantee glare-free light.
Keep fabric selection, lamp color temperature, and metal finish separate. The same shade can appear different with another source or background. Use an appropriate reference when coordinating Flax, Pleated White, or another offered shade with paint and upholstery; do not assume a photograph establishes an exact textile match.
Match the lamp to the fixture’s socket, permitted electrical requirements, physical space, and shade clearances. A socket type does not establish a safe wattage or lamp envelope on its own. Follow the supplied specification rather than selecting a bulb only by how warmly it appears behind the fabric.
Mounting, Controls, and Care
Have the electrician check the completed weight, canopy, rods or chain, ceiling condition, and wiring. Review the full hanging arrangement for the chosen size, with the shade edges included. A supplied cord length is not an available installed-drop range.
The dimming compatibility guide covers source and control coordination. For finish planning, use the brass lighting guide, while retaining the exact product’s offered frame choice.
Follow the shade’s care instructions. Do not assume a fabric shade is washable or use the wet-cleaning method intended for glass. Plan access to the shade surfaces and frame, and ask how a replacement shade is identified and fitted. Repeated small shades need their own care and service review even when the open frame looks simple.
Fabric-Shade Chandelier FAQ
Does a 36-inch round chandelier have one 36-inch fabric shade?
Not necessarily. Adria Round’s 36-inch width describes the complete arrangement of smaller shades and arms.
Are Rhodes Linear’s frame depth and length the same measurement?
No. The listed frame widths are 50.5 and 61.5 inches; both have a 5.5-inch depth.
Does adding a shade tier change only the light count?
No. Rhodes 2-Tier has a different complete width and height, so compare its full outline and hanging arrangement.
Can any E12 lamp be used behind a fabric shade?
No. Match the permitted electrical requirements, physical lamp size, shade clearance, and dimming specification as well as the socket.
Can fabric chandelier shades be washed?
Only if the supplied care instructions allow it. Fabric, lining, adhesive, and support details can require a different cleaning method.
